Motorcycle Exhaust Systems: Complete Buying Guide

Motorcycle Exhaust Systems: Complete Buying Guide

Upgrading your motorcycle exhaust is one of the most popular aftermarket modifications — and for good reason. A quality exhaust system can improve performance, reduce weight, and transform the sound of your bike. But with so many options available, choosing the right system can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down everything you need to know before you buy.

Slip-On vs Full System Exhaust: What's the Difference?

The first decision every rider faces is choosing between a slip-on (also called a muffler replacement) or a full exhaust system.

Slip-On Exhausts

A slip-on replaces only the muffler section of your existing exhaust. Installation is straightforward — typically a 20–30 minute job — and no remapping is usually required for most bikes. Slip-ons are the most cost-effective way to improve exhaust note and shed weight from the back of the bike.

  • Best for: Riders who want improved sound and aesthetics without major investment
  • Typical weight saving: 1–3 kg over stock
  • Power gain: Minimal without additional tuning
  • Price range: Generally more affordable than full systems

Full Exhaust Systems

A full system replaces everything from the exhaust headers right through to the muffler. This is the route to take if you're serious about performance gains. By improving exhaust flow throughout the entire system, a full system can unlock significantly more horsepower — but it typically requires ECU remapping to get the most benefit and to avoid running too lean.

  • Best for: Performance-focused builds, track use, or full custom builds
  • Typical weight saving: 3–7 kg over stock
  • Power gain: Noticeable gains possible with ECU remap
  • Price range: Higher investment, but maximum return

Exhaust Materials: Titanium, Stainless Steel or Carbon Fibre?

The material your exhaust is made from affects weight, durability, appearance and price.

Titanium

Titanium exhausts are the pinnacle of performance exhaust technology. Incredibly light and incredibly strong, titanium systems are the choice of race teams and serious track day riders. Over time, titanium develops a distinctive blue/gold heat tint that many riders love. Expect to pay a premium for titanium, but the weight savings are exceptional.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel offers the best balance of durability, affordability and corrosion resistance. It's heavier than titanium but significantly more affordable, and it holds up well to road use and the British weather. Most road-going aftermarket exhausts use stainless steel for the headers and mid-pipe.

Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibre is typically used for muffler end cans rather than entire systems. It looks spectacular, resists heat well and saves weight, but requires care to avoid cracking from impacts. Carbon fibre end cans are a popular choice for riders who want a premium look without the full titanium price tag.

Noise Levels and Road Legality

This is an important consideration that's often overlooked. In the UK, all road-going exhaust systems must comply with noise regulations. Aftermarket exhausts sold for road use in the EU and UK are tested to meet these standards and will carry EC type approval markings.

Many performance exhausts are sold as "race use only" — these are not road legal and should only be used on track. If you're buying for road use, check that the exhaust carries the relevant approval markings. Some manufacturers include a dB killer (also called a noise insert) that can be removed for track use.

Fitment: Will It Fit My Bike?

Exhaust systems are bike-specific — there's no such thing as a universal fit. Always check compatibility with your exact make, model and year before purchasing. At Euro Motards, we guarantee fitment: if a product is listed as compatible with your bike, it will fit. If you're unsure, contact us before ordering.

Key things to check:

  • Your bike's exact model code (e.g. MT-09 SP vs standard MT-09)
  • Model year — exhaust mounts can change between years
  • Whether your bike has any factory accessories that may affect fitment

Top Exhaust Brands

We stock exhausts from the most respected brands in the industry:

  • Akrapovic — Slovenian manufacturer, the benchmark for premium titanium and stainless systems. Used by MotoGP and World Superbike teams.
  • Yoshimura — Japanese heritage brand with decades of race pedigree. Excellent stainless and titanium options.
  • SC-Project — Italian manufacturer specialising in lightweight carbon and titanium systems with an aggressive sound profile.
  • Termignoni — Italian brand with strong Ducati heritage, now covering a wide range of manufacturers.
  • Arrow — Italian brand offering a broad range at competitive price points without compromising on quality.

Installing Your Exhaust

Slip-on exhausts are accessible for home mechanics with basic tools. Full systems are more involved and require care with header torque settings and gasket replacement. Key installation tips:

  • Always replace exhaust gaskets — never reuse old ones
  • Use anti-seize compound on all thread connections
  • Torque all fixings to the manufacturer's specification
  • Allow the exhaust to heat-cycle (ride, cool down, ride again) before final tightening
  • Check for leaks after the first ride
