Yamaha MT-09 Exhaust Upgrades: Slip-On and Full Systems for the Triple
The Yamaha MT-09 (FZ-09 in North America) is the most characterful middleweight naked on the market. The 890cc three-cylinder engine (847cc on early models) delivers an addictive combination of midrange torque and top-end charge that makes it genuinely exciting to ride. The exhaust note, however, is deliberately suppressed — Yamaha's Euro compliance packaging means the stock system mutes a sound that could be exceptional. The aftermarket fixes this.
This guide covers exhaust options for all MT-09 generations, including the Tracer 9 and XSR900 which share the same engine and exhaust routing.
MT-09 Generations
- 2013-2020: Original 847cc triple, right-side exhaust exit. Extremely wide aftermarket availability — the most popular fitment range.
- 2021+ (CP3 engine, 890cc): Updated engine, new frame, Euro 5 compliant. Different exhaust routing — NOT compatible with 2013-2020 exhausts. Check the year carefully.
The Tracer 9 (900/GT) and XSR900 share the same engine as the MT-09 of each generation and use the same exhaust systems.
Best Exhaust Options for the MT-09
GPR M3 Inox — Popular for the Triple Sound
The GPR M3 on the MT-09 produces the sound many triple-cylinder owners are looking for: a snapping, aggressive overrun with a deep mid-range bark. The three-cylinder exhaust note is inherently more interesting than a four-cylinder and the M3 lets it breathe. EC homologated, stainless steel construction.
GPR Albus Evo4
The Albus gives a slightly more refined character than the M3 — still significantly louder than stock, but with a rounder tone. The white carbon finish works visually with the MT-09's styling.
Exan X-Black Titanium
Exan's titanium-bodied canister for the MT-09 is a premium upgrade. The triple's sound through titanium has a specific dry, crackling character at high revs that is distinctive. Weight: approximately 1.1kg versus 2.8kg for the stock steel muffler. Best choice for riders focused on weight and acoustics.
Crash Protection Combination
The MT-09 is a popular track-day and spirited road bike — pairing an exhaust upgrade with frame sliders is common. Browse our crash protection range for MT-09 compatible options.
