How to Clean and Maintain Your Motorcycle Exhaust

Why Exhaust Maintenance Matters

An aftermarket exhaust is often one of the most visible and expensive modifications on a motorcycle. Neglecting it leads to discolouration, surface oxidation on titanium, carbon buildup inside stainless or carbon-fibre cans, and — in the worst case — corrosion that shortens the exhaust's life significantly. Regular maintenance takes 20 minutes and keeps your exhaust looking and performing as intended for years.

Understanding Your Exhaust Material

Different materials require different care:

  • Stainless steel: Most durable. Resists corrosion well but will discolour (blue, gold) with heat — this is normal. Can be polished back or left as a patina.
  • Titanium: Lightweight and strong but oxidises readily. The rainbow discolouration on titanium exhausts is part of the aesthetic — attempts to polish it away often make it worse. Specific titanium cleaners are required.
  • Carbon fibre sleeves: The sleeve itself is largely maintenance-free but the carbon will chalk and fade if exposed to UV without protection. The internal metal can section still needs treating.
  • Aluminium end caps: Oxidise to a dull grey without care. Aluminium-specific polish restores shine.

What to Use — and What to Avoid

Never use wire wool or abrasive pads on any exhaust material — they will scratch. Avoid household cleaners and WD-40 on hot exhaust surfaces — residue burns on and creates worse discolouration than the original problem. Avoid high-pressure jet washing directly into the joint between the muffler and midpipe.

Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Stainless Steel Exhaust

Step 1 — Clean When Cold

Always clean an exhaust that has fully cooled. Cleaning products applied to hot metal can discolour or burn immediately, and the metal expands when hot — a cold surface is easier to work with.

Step 2 — Remove Surface Dirt

Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe down the muffler body and remove loose dirt, dust, and road grime. For insects or tar spots on the lower sections, use a dedicated motorcycle cleaner or tar remover on a cloth — don't spray it directly onto the exhaust.

Step 3 — Apply Exhaust Cleaner or Metal Polish

Apply a purpose-made exhaust cleaner or a quality metal polish (such as Autosol) to a clean cloth, not directly to the exhaust. Work in circular motions on small sections. For heat discolouration (the blue/gold staining common on stainless), a product designed specifically for exhaust discolouration will give better results than a general metal polish.

Step 4 — Buff Off

With a clean, dry microfibre cloth, buff the polished sections to a shine. Work quickly before the polish dries and hazes.

Step 5 — Apply Exhaust Heat Wax

Several manufacturers produce heat-resistant waxes (up to 350°C) designed for exhaust systems. A thin coat applied after cleaning and buffed off protects against moisture and slows the return of discolouration. This is especially effective on bikes kept outdoors.

Cleaning Titanium Exhausts

Titanium requires a gentler approach. Use a titanium-specific cleaner. Apply with a very soft cloth and light pressure — titanium scratches more easily than stainless. Accept that some heat colouration will always return — this is the nature of titanium and is considered part of its character. Never use abrasive or acid-based cleaners on titanium.

Caring for Carbon Fibre

Wipe the carbon fibre section with a damp cloth and dry immediately. For protection, apply a UV-resistant detailer or quick detailer spray to the carbon — this restores depth and slows UV degradation. Never apply heat wax to carbon — the chemicals in many waxes can discolour the resin.

Internal Maintenance

Carbon buildup inside the muffler is normal and generally doesn't need addressing unless performance degrades. If the exhaust starts sounding restricted, a professional internal clean (or a new packing on repacking-type cans) may be needed every 10,000–20,000 km depending on use.

Winter Storage

Before storing the bike, clean the exhaust thoroughly, apply heat wax, and stuff the exhaust outlet with a cloth or rubber bung to prevent moisture ingress. Condensation inside a stored exhaust causes rust from the inside out.
