European Motorcycle Track Day Noise Limits: Circuit-by-Circuit dB Comparison (Spa, Mugello, Misano, Assen, Le Mans and More)

Every European circuit sets its own noise limit, tests it differently, and enforces it differently — which means an exhaust and dB killer combination that passes scrutineering at one track can get you black-flagged at another. This is a reference comparison of static and dynamic noise limits at major European circuits, plus the road-legal EU type-approval rules that apply if you're riding to and from the track rather than trailering.

Road-Legal EU Noise Limits: How the Rules Actually Work

Since the EU adopted UNECE Regulation 41 (implemented alongside the Euro 4 and Euro 5 type-approval standards), motorcycle noise limits are no longer set by a flat dB figure based on engine size. Instead they're calculated from a Power-to-Mass Ratio (PMR) — net power divided by (vehicle mass + 75kg), multiplied by 1,000. For almost all road motorcycles this calculation lands above the regulation's threshold, which sets the limit at 77 dB(A), replacing the older flat 80 dB(A) limit used under pre-Euro 4 rules.

Two test methods are used together: a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) pass-by test (the bike enters at a steady 50 km/h, the rider opens the throttle fully over a measured 40-metre zone while microphones 7.5 metres off the line record the peak), and a stationary test at a fixed engine speed (typically half of the motorcycle's maximum rpm, measured 0.5 metres from the outlet at a 45° angle). The stationary test result and the rpm it was measured at are stamped on the bike's VIN plate and used by roadside enforcement — this is the number a police check or an MOT-style inspection will compare your exhaust against.

Aftermarket silencers have their own separate approval standard, UNECE Regulation 92: a replacement silencer cannot exceed the noise level of the original equipment it replaces. To close a loophole where adjustable-valve silencers stayed quiet during the certification test but opened up outside the tested rev range, the regulation includes an ASEP (Advanced Sound Emission Provisions) annex that widens the tested speed and gear range specifically to catch that behaviour. A dB killer or baffle also has to be installed so it can't be trivially removed — a press-fit or lightly-secured baffle that a rider is expected to pull out for track use does not meet the standard on its own.

European Circuit Track Day Noise Limits Compared

Track day noise limits are set by each circuit or promoter, independent of road-legal type approval, and are usually stricter. Below are published static and dynamic limits at several major continental circuits, based on figures published by track day organiser Bikers' Days for their own events at each venue:

Why the Same Bike Can Pass One Circuit and Fail Another

A handful of practical consequences follow from circuits setting their own independent limits:

  • Test rpm varies — Spa-Francorchamps tests at a fixed 8,000 rpm regardless of your engine's displacement or redline, which penalises smaller-displacement bikes that rev higher relative to their peak noise output. A circuit testing at a percentage of your bike's own max rpm gives a different result for the same exhaust.
  • Static vs dynamic testing isn't interchangeable —ike Mettet's two-tier system (a stricter static pre-check, then a separate dynamic on-track limit), some circuits test only one way. A dB killer that scrapes past a static idle-area check can still be too loud once you're actually accelerating out of a corner.
  • dB killer condition matters more at strict circuits — baffles and racing muffler cartridges lose effectiveness over time as the packing material degrades. A dB killer that passed comfortably a season ago may not pass at a 94-100 dB circuit today. Check condition before a trip to a circuit with a tight limit, not after a black flag.
  • Even standard exhausts can fail — some factory exhaust systems on high-output bikes exceed strict track limits even unmodified. Don't assume a bike is compliant just because it's running its original system.

If you're travelling to ride multiple circuits across a season, the safest approach is to set up for the strictest limit on your calendar (typically the 94-100 dB range) rather than assuming a UK-passed setup will clear a continental circuit, or vice versa.
