Why Track Day Noise Limits Matter
You've booked your track day, polished your leathers, and fitted that race exhaust. Then you roll up to noise check and get turned away. It's one of the most frustrating experiences a track rider can have — and it's entirely avoidable if you understand how UK track day noise limits work before you show up.
Track day noise regulations exist primarily to protect circuit operating licences. Circuits surrounded by residential areas face constant pressure from local councils, and exceeding noise limits repeatedly can result in a circuit losing the right to host events. The limits aren't arbitrary — they're the difference between a circuit staying open and closing permanently.
The Standard: 105 dB Static Test
The most common noise test used at UK track days is the static drive-by test at 105 dB(A). This is the near-universal standard adopted by most circuits and track day organisers in the UK, including Donington Park, Brands Hatch, Silverstone, and Snetterton.
In a static test, the tester holds a calibrated sound level meter at a fixed distance from the exhaust outlet (typically 0.5 metres at a 45-degree angle) while the rider revs the engine to a specified RPM — usually three-quarters of the redline. If the peak reading exceeds 105 dB(A), you fail and cannot participate until the issue is resolved.
Why 105 dB?
105 dB(A) is a compromise figure that allows performance-oriented exhaust systems while keeping overall circuit noise within acceptable limits. It's significantly louder than road-legal limits but quiet enough to give circuits meaningful headroom below their planning permission noise thresholds.
Some Circuits Run Stricter Limits
Not all UK circuits use 105 dB. Castle Combe, for example, has historically enforced lower limits — sometimes as tight as 98 dB — due to its proximity to the village of Castle Combe itself. Cadwell Park and Oulton Park have also run stricter limits at certain events. Always check the specific limit with your track day organiser before attending, not just the circuit's general information page.

How to Check Your Exhaust's dB Level
The most reliable way to know whether your exhaust will pass is to check the manufacturer's published static noise figure for your specific system and bike. Reputable brands like Akrapovic, SC-Project, Arrow, and Termignoni publish these figures for each system. Look for the static test figure, not the drive-by figure used for road legal approval — these are different measurements.
If the manufacturer doesn't publish a static figure, or if you've modified the system (removed a baffle, for example), you'll need to test it yourself with a calibrated meter before the event — or bring a dB-reducer insert as insurance.
dB Reducers and Baffles
Most aftermarket race systems can be fitted with a removable dB reducer (also called a silencer insert or baffle). These typically bring noise down by 3 to 8 dB depending on the exhaust design. If your system tests at 109 dB without a baffle, fitting one could bring you within the 105 dB limit. However, some baffles reduce power significantly — it's worth dyno-testing with the baffle fitted if race performance matters to you.
Static vs Drive-By Testing
Static testing (used at most UK track days) measures peak noise at a fixed point. Drive-by testing (used for road type approval) measures noise as the bike accelerates past a fixed microphone. These produce different readings for the same exhaust — a system might be road legal at 77 dB drive-by but read 108 dB static. Always confirm which test method applies to your track day.
What Happens If You Fail Noise Check?
Most organisers will allow you to fit a dB reducer or swap to a quieter exhaust before re-testing. Some will refund your session fee if you genuinely cannot resolve the issue. A small number of organisers operate a strict no-refund policy on noise failures, which is another reason to test before you arrive.
