SYM has carved out a solid niche in the UK scooter market, with the Joymax Z and NH-T offering compelling value for money alongside respectable performance. For SYM owners looking to personalise their ride and improve the exhaust note, aftermarket options are available — though the range is more limited than for mainstream Japanese brands.

SYM Joymax Z Exhaust

The Joymax Z is SYM's flagship maxi-scooter, available in 125 and 300cc variants. The 300 in particular is an accomplished commuter and touring machine, and the stock exhaust — while functional — is heavily suppressed. An aftermarket slip-on brings a noticeably fuller sound and a modest weight saving that improves the bike's overall feel.

Installation follows the standard slip-on process: loosen the mid-pipe clamp, remove the OEM silencer bracket bolt, and fit the aftermarket unit. The Joymax Z's exhaust is positioned on the right side of the bike with good access, making the job manageable for a home mechanic.

SYM NH-T Exhaust

The NH-T is a more urban-focused commuter in the SYM range. Its smaller, lighter format means exhaust weight is proportionally more significant — a lighter aftermarket silencer makes a real difference to the NH-T's nimble character. As with the Joymax Z, a slip-on is the most straightforward upgrade.

Road Legality in the UK

SYM riders using their scooters for commuting — as the majority do — must keep their exhaust road legal. Any aftermarket exhaust must either carry an e2 type approval mark or be used with its supplied db killer insert to pass MOT and comply with UK noise regulations.

Removing the db killer on a commuter scooter used daily is not advisable — beyond legality, it can attract unwanted attention and lead to failed MOT tests. With the db killer fitted, the sound improvement over standard is still substantial.

Finding the Right Fitment

SYM model year fitments can be tricky — the Joymax Z and NH-T have seen several updates, and not all aftermarket exhausts list SYM models explicitly. When in doubt, check the OEM mid-pipe diameter and mounting bracket position against the aftermarket specifications, or contact us for advice.
