The Piaggio MP3 and Vespa GTS represent two very different approaches to scootering — the MP3's three-wheeled stability system versus the GTS's classic Italian style — but both share the same need for a quality exhaust upgrade that improves sound and performance without compromising road legality.
Piaggio MP3 Exhaust Options
The Piaggio MP3 range spans from 125cc through to 500cc, and exhaust options vary significantly by engine size. The MP3 300 and MP3 500 see the greatest performance benefit from an aftermarket system, with improved throttle response particularly noticeable at urban speeds where the MP3's tilting front end shines.
A slip-on silencer is the most practical upgrade — it retains the OEM headers, installs in under an hour, and requires no mapping changes. For the MP3, which is often chosen as a car-licence accessible three-wheeler, maintaining simplicity of maintenance is important, and a slip-on fits that requirement perfectly.
Vespa GTS Exhaust Upgrades
The Vespa GTS 125, GTS 250, GTS 300, and GTS 300 HPE all benefit from aftermarket exhaust options. The GTS's monocoque steel body means the exhaust is a visible style element as well as a performance component — many GTS owners choose a polished stainless or carbon fibre silencer specifically for its visual impact.
On the GTS 300 and 300 HPE, a slip-on exhaust typically delivers improved mid-range response and a noticeably richer sound over the stock unit, which is heavily suppressed from the factory.

UK Road Legality and the MOT
Both the MP3 and GTS are popular commuter choices in the UK, and riders must ensure any aftermarket exhaust is road-legal. Look for exhausts that are e2 type approved or supplied with a db killer insert. Fitting the db killer for road use keeps you on the right side of the law and protects your MOT result.
Removing the db killer for a track day or off-road use is fine, but it must be refitted before returning to public roads. For three-wheeler MP3 riders, note that the tilting lock on the MP3 when stationary means the exhaust side clearance is particularly important — always verify fitment dimensions.
Installation Notes
Installation on both platforms is straightforward for a slip-on: loosen the clamp at the mid-pipe join, remove the OEM silencer bracket bolts, and swap the units. The Vespa GTS bodywork may require slight panel removal to access the exhaust mount on some models — check your specific model year before starting.
