Motorcycle Traction Control Add-On Guide: IRC and PZRacing
Why Add Aftermarket Traction Control?
Most production motorcycles sold before 2015 — and many budget/mid-range bikes today — came without traction control, or with a very basic on/off system that cuts the engine so aggressively it's often turned off by riders. Aftermarket traction control systems like those from IRC (Intellitronic Race Control) and PZRacing give you the kind of programmable, sensitive traction management previously reserved for factory race teams and flagship superbikes.
The result is faster corner exits, more confidence on damp or inconsistent surfaces, and a genuine safety net for street riding — all without changing the fundamental character of the bike.
How Aftermarket Traction Control Works
Aftermarket systems use wheel speed sensors (front and rear) to compare the rotational speed of both wheels. When the rear wheel spins faster than the front by more than a programmed threshold, the system intervenes — typically by retarding ignition timing, cutting fuel to specific cylinders, or modifying throttle position. The key difference from basic OEM systems is intervention level: sophisticated aftermarket units intervene gradually, reducing wheelspin progressively rather than cutting the engine entirely.
Most systems also offer multiple intervention levels — from a track-focused minimum (allowing a small, controlled amount of wheelspin for maximum corner exit drive) to a road-focused maximum (near-zero wheelspin at all times).
IRC — Intellitronic Race Control
IRC systems are designed primarily for track and race use, with deep programmability for serious riders. Key features include:
- Multiple TC levels with fully programmable intervention thresholds
- Compatible with most 4-cylinder, twin, and single-cylinder engines
- Can be combined with quickshifter and launch control functionality on some models
- Data logging available on higher-spec units
IRC is particularly popular with club racers and track day riders who want precise control over TC sensitivity across different corners and conditions. Setup requires some technical knowledge but is well-documented.
PZRacing
PZRacing make a broad range of race electronics including traction control units that balance usability with performance. Their TC systems are known for:
- Compact, weather-resistant control units
- Simple rotary dial adjustment for TC level on the fly
- Broad compatibility across sport, naked, and adventure bikes
- Integrated options combining TC with launch control and pit lane limiter
PZRacing units are a popular choice for riders who want meaningful traction control improvement without a full ECU remap or complex installation.
Installation Overview
Wheel Speed Sensors
Both systems require fitting a wheel speed sensor to the front wheel (the rear sensor on most bikes is already present or can be derived from the ABS ring if fitted). This is the most involved part of the installation — routing the cable cleanly and mounting the sensor bracket without fouling the brake caliper or disc takes care.
Control Unit Mounting
The control unit needs a vibration-damped, weather-protected location. Under the tail unit or behind the dashboard panel are common locations. Both IRC and PZRacing units are compact enough to fit in tight spaces.
ECU Interface
Intervention is typically via the ignition circuit. On CAN-bus equipped bikes, a CAN-compatible interface module may be required — check the compatibility list carefully for your model year, as ECU architecture changes between model years even on the same bike.
Setup and Calibration
Once installed, calibrate the wheel diameter inputs in the system software. Then ride at low speed and confirm the sensor readings are correct — both wheels should show matching speeds on a straight road. Start with the TC at maximum intervention level and progressively dial it back across sessions until you find the level that gives you confidence without limiting exit drive.
