The Honest Answer to Exhaust Heat Wrap
Heat wrap gets a mixed reception from experienced motorcyclists, and with good reason — it works for some applications and is actively counterproductive in others. Here's an honest assessment of what heat wrap does, when it's appropriate, and when you should use something else instead.
What Heat Wrap Actually Does
Exhaust heat wrap is a woven ceramic or fibreglass material wound around exhaust headers and mid-pipes. Its primary function is to reduce the amount of heat radiated outward from the exhaust — keeping thermal energy inside the pipe rather than radiating it to the surrounding components and rider.
This delivers two benefits when it works: radiated heat reduction (useful for protecting nearby rubber, plastic components and the rider's knee on naked bikes) and a modest increase in exhaust gas velocity because hotter gas flows faster. The latter can contribute marginally to improved scavenging at the top of the rev range.
The Problem: Moisture Trapping and Corrosion
Here's where heat wrap falls down for most road motorcycles. Wrapping absorbs moisture from rain and condensation and holds it against the exhaust header. If the bike is used regularly and headers get genuinely hot on every ride, this moisture burns off and isn't a problem. But on a typical UK road bike — used intermittently, stored outdoors or in a damp garage, doing short commutes where headers never fully heat cycle — moisture sits against mild steel headers for extended periods.
The result is accelerated corrosion. Mild steel headers under heat wrap can rust from the outside in far faster than unwrapped headers. By the time you remove the wrap to check, the rust may already be advanced.
Titanium and Stainless Exhausts
This corrosion concern applies mainly to mild steel headers — which covers most OEM exhaust systems and some budget aftermarket options. Titanium and stainless steel headers are significantly more corrosion-resistant and less affected by moisture under wrap. If you have a titanium aftermarket full system, the wrap corrosion argument weakens considerably.
What to Use Instead: Ceramic Coating
For road motorcycles, ceramic exhaust coating is the better solution. Applied professionally, ceramic coating bonds to the header surface, reduces radiated heat similarly to wrap, and does not trap moisture against the metal. The visual result is also cleaner — a ceramic-coated header looks deliberate and finished, rather than having the somewhat DIY appearance of heat wrap.
Ceramic coating does need professional application and is more expensive than wrap. But for a bike used on UK roads year-round, the long-term outcome is substantially better.
When Heat Wrap Is Appropriate
Track use, where the bike is stored dry, ridden hard until everything is thoroughly heat-cycled, maintained regularly and often stripped for servicing, is where heat wrap makes more sense. Track exhaust systems are also more frequently replaced than road systems, so the accelerated corrosion issue matters less if the system is coming off in a season anyway.
For track day bikes and dedicated race machines, heat wrap is a legitimate, cost-effective solution. For road bikes in the UK climate, the risk-benefit calculation points toward ceramic coating or simply leaving the headers unwrapped.
