What the MOT Checks on Your Motorcycle Exhaust
Every year, thousands of UK motorcycles fail their MOT due to exhaust-related issues. Some failures are obvious — a cracked downpipe or a loose connection. Others catch riders off guard, particularly those who've fitted aftermarket systems without fully understanding what MOT testers look for. Here's a complete breakdown of how the MOT assesses your exhaust, and how to make sure yours passes.
The MOT Exhaust Inspection: Four Key Areas
1. Security and Condition
The tester will physically inspect the exhaust for cracks, holes, or corrosion that could cause leaks. Every joint and connection point is assessed. Hangers and mounting brackets must be secure — a loose silencer that moves under hand pressure is a fail. Gaskets must seal correctly; even a small exhaust gas leak at the header flange will result in a rejection.
Corrosion is assessed on a scale of severity. Surface rust on a steel system is noted but not necessarily a fail. Deep corrosion that has compromised structural integrity — particularly on the header pipes close to the engine — will fail. Stainless steel and titanium systems rarely cause issues here.
2. Noise
The MOT standard requires the exhaust to not be excessively noisy. Unlike track day noise testing, there is no decibel meter involved. The tester assesses noise subjectively while the engine is running. A clearly aftermarket exhaust that is noticeably louder than standard — particularly one with the baffle removed — is likely to fail this check.
The relevant standard in the DVSA Motorcycle Inspection Manual states the exhaust must not emit excessive noise. This is deliberately vague, which gives testers discretion. In practice, a well-fitted, baffled aftermarket system from a reputable brand is unlikely to fail noise; a straight-through race pipe almost certainly will.
3. Emissions
Emissions testing is the area where aftermarket exhausts most frequently cause unexpected failures. The test method varies by the bike's age and fuel system:
- Catalytic converter bikes (Euro 3 and later, most post-2006 models): CO must be below 0.3% at idle and 0.2% at fast idle. HC must be below 100 ppm. Lambda must be within a tight band at fast idle.
- Non-catalyst bikes (older models): CO must be below 4.5% at idle.
Removing the catalytic converter from a Euro 3 or later bike will almost always cause an emissions failure, as the raw exhaust gases without catalytic treatment exceed the CO and HC limits. Full systems that replace the cat section must include a new cat to remain compliant.
4. Excessive Smoke
The tester will check for excessive blue, black, or white smoke. Blue smoke (oil burning) and black smoke (over-fuelling) are both MOT failures regardless of exhaust fitment. A clean-running engine with a well-matched aftermarket system should produce no visible smoke.

How to Pass First Time with an Aftermarket Exhaust
The most important step is to choose a road-legal, e-marked exhaust system designed specifically for your motorcycle model and year. These systems are tested to meet noise and emissions standards and include all necessary mounting hardware. They are designed to be MOT-compliant out of the box.
If you're fitting a full system, ensure it retains or replaces the catalytic converter unless your bike pre-dates the relevant Euro standard. Always fit the system with new gaskets and ensure all joints are properly sealed and tightened. After fitting, check emissions with a gas analyser before presenting for MOT — many independent workshops will do a quick emissions check on request.
