How to Fit Motorcycle Frame Sliders: Step-by-Step Guide

Frame sliders are one of the most valuable pieces of crash protection you can fit to a motorcycle. In a low-speed tip-over — the kind that happens in car parks, at junctions or on track — they absorb the initial impact and prevent the bike sliding along the tarmac on vulnerable engine cases, fairings and footrests. Fitting them is well within the ability of any home mechanic. Here's exactly how to do it.

  • Model-specific frame slider kit
  • Socket set and torque wrench
  • Allen keys (metric)
  • Threadlock (medium strength, e.g. Loctite 243)
  • The bike's service manual or a printed torque specification for your frame bolts
  • On fully-faired bikes: panel removal tools or plastic pry bars to avoid scratching

Choosing the Right Frame Sliders

Frame sliders come in two main styles: no-cut (which mount using existing engine or frame bolts and do not require fairing modification) and cut (which require a hole cut in the fairing for the protector to protrude through). No-cut sliders are simpler to fit and reversible; cut sliders typically position the protector better and offer more coverage. Always buy a model-specific kit — generic sliders often lack the correct spacers and mount points for your particular frame geometry.

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Read the Instructions

Before touching the bike, read the manufacturer's instructions completely. Different slider designs have different installation sequences. Lay out all the supplied components — bolts, spacers, washers, the slider heads — and confirm nothing is missing.

Step 2: Prepare the Work Area

Place the bike on its centre stand or paddock stand so it is stable throughout the job. A tipping bike during installation causes accidents and can damage freshly fitted components. Work in a well-lit space with enough room to move around both sides.

Step 3: Remove Fairings if Required

On fully-faired sportsbikes, the frame bolt you need to access will be hidden behind a lower fairing panel. Remove the relevant panel carefully using panel clips and plastic pry tools — forcing clips is the number one cause of broken mounts. Set the panel aside somewhere it won't get knocked. Note which clips go where as you remove them.

Step 4: Locate the Mounting Bolt

Most frame sliders replace an existing engine-to-frame or frame-to-swingarm bolt. Identify the correct bolt using the instructions and confirm it matches the supplied hardware. On some bikes, the factory bolt is shorter than the slider mounting bolt — this is normal and expected; the slider kit includes the correct longer replacement.

Step 5: Remove the Original Bolt

Using the correct socket or Allen key, remove the original bolt. Note: some frame bolts are torqued very tightly from the factory. If it won't budge with hand tools, use a breaker bar — never an impact driver, which can damage threads. If the bolt is threadlocked from the factory, gentle heat from a heat gun (not a blowtorch) can help release it.

Step 6: Thread the Slider Mounting Bolt Through

Thread the new longer bolt supplied in the kit through the slider mount, the spacer(s) and the frame/engine mount point exactly as shown in the instructions. Ensure all spacers are in the correct order — incorrect stacking can cause misalignment or insufficient clamping force.

Step 7: Apply Threadlock and Torque to Spec

Apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlock to the bolt threads before final fitting. Using your torque wrench, tighten to the specification given in the slider kit instructions — this is typically the same as the original factory torque for that bolt. Do not over-torque; cracking an engine casing is an expensive mistake.

Step 8: Fit the Slider Head

Once the mount bolt is torqued, fit the slider head (the nylon or delrin impact absorber) onto the protruding threaded section. On most designs this screws on by hand and is then locked with a supplied grub screw or nut. Ensure it is secure but do not over-tighten — slider heads are designed to absorb and transfer energy, and over-tightening can cause cracking.

Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side

Frame sliders are always fitted in pairs. Repeat Steps 3 through 8 for the opposite side of the bike. Take your time and do not rush — the second side is where most mistakes happen.

Step 10: Refit Fairings and Check Clearances

Refit any fairings removed, ensuring all clips seat correctly. Check that the slider heads protrude correctly through any fairing cut-outs. Stand back and visually check both sides — the sliders should sit at the same height and angle. Finally, with the bike still on its stand, push gently against the slider heads to confirm they are solid and have no play.

Final Checks

Take the bike off its stand and check that nothing interferes with steering lock, lean angle or ground clearance. Check that all removed fairings are fully secured before riding. On your first ride, keep to low speeds briefly to confirm there is no unexpected vibration or interference.
