BMW R1250GS vs R1200GS: Accessories Compatibility Guide

The BMW R1200GS and R1250GS are two generations of the world's most popular adventure motorcycle. If you're upgrading from an R1200GS to an R1250GS — or if you're buying accessories and wondering what fits which — this guide clarifies the compatibility picture. The short answer: some parts transfer, many do not.

Engine and Platform Differences

The R1200GS uses BMW's 1170cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin (LC — Liquid Cooled versions from 2013). The R1250GS introduced the ShiftCam variable valve timing system in 2019, along with a 1254cc engine displament. The fundamental boxer twin architecture is shared, but the engine dimensions differ enough that exhaust fitment is not interchangeable.

The chassis is also revised on the R1250GS — different frame geometry, updated suspension linkage, and revised electronics architecture. Bodywork panels, crash protection mounting points, and ergonomic components are model-specific.

Exhaust Compatibility: Not Interchangeable

Exhaust systems for the R1200GS and R1250GS are specific to each model. The header dimensions and catalytic converter placement differ between the 1200 and 1250 engines, and the R1250GS exhaust also has to accommodate the ShiftCam system's revised exhaust port geometry.

The most popular exhaust brands for both bikes are consistent — Akrapovic, Arrow, and GPR all offer model-specific systems — but you must select the correct generation. Ordering an R1200GS system for an R1250GS will not fit.

Seat Covers: Generation-Specific

The R1200GS and R1250GS have different seat profiles. While the seat shape appears similar, the dimensions and mounting system differ enough that seat covers are model-specific. Top Sellerie and Luimoto both offer covers for both generations, but you must select the correct model.

Note that the R1250GS Adventure has a different seat profile again compared to the standard R1250GS, so Adventure owners must select Adventure-specific covers.

Suspension and Steering: Some Overlap

In the suspension category, some items transfer between generations — particularly steering dampers and certain fork components. The R1250GS with ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) uses proprietary components that are not compatible with older R1200GS suspension parts. However, some universal steering damper mounts and non-electronic suspension accessories are compatible across both generations.

Crash Protection: Check Carefully

Frame sliders, engine guards, and crash bars are largely model-specific due to mounting point differences. However, several brands (Wunderlich, Hepco & Becker, SW-Motech) produce parts that are compatible across both generations — particularly engine crash bars that use a common mounting architecture. Always check the product listing for explicit R1250GS and R1200GS compatibility before ordering.

R1200GS Years to Note

The R1200GS itself changed significantly through its production run:

• 2004-2012: Air-cooled (no liquid cooling)
• 2013-2018: Water-cooled LC version with revised engine and chassis

Accessories for the 2013+ LC model are not compatible with the pre-2013 air-cooled model. If you own a pre-2013 R1200GS, always check that the product you're ordering specifies compatibility with the air-cooled version.
