The Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 is not a budget motorcycle. Derived directly from the RSV4 superbike platform, it carries premium Italian engineering throughout — a hand-assembled V4 engine, fully adjustable suspension, and bodywork that is as intricate as it is expensive to replace. A low-speed drop in a car park or a spill at a track day can result in thousands of pounds of damage to fairings, engine cases, and frame components.

This makes crash protection one of the most important and cost-effective investments a Tuono V4 owner can make. The right combination of frame sliders, bobbins, and axle protectors can mean the difference between walking away from a drop with a few scuffs and writing a large cheque to your dealer's parts department.

Frame Sliders: No-Cut vs Cut Kits

Frame sliders are the cornerstone of any Tuono V4 crash protection setup. They mount to the frame or engine via purpose-designed bolts and present a sacrificial puck — typically high-density nylon or delrin — to the ground in the event of a slide. Rather than your fairing or engine case taking the full impact, the slider absorbs and deflects the force.

For the Tuono V4, frame sliders come in two main configurations. No-cut kits are designed to work around the existing bodywork with minimal or no fairing modification. Cut kits require cutting a small hole in the fairing to allow the slider to protrude through to the frame mounting point. This gives a more direct, lower-profile fit and better protection geometry, as the slider is positioned closer to where it will actually contact the ground. Cut kits are preferred for track day use where maximum protection takes priority over aesthetics.

When fitting sliders to the Tuono V4 1100 or V4 Factory, confirm fitment by year — Aprilia made chassis revisions across generations. Earlier V4 models (pre-2017) have different frame geometry and mounting provisions to the current 1100 generation. Always verify compatibility before purchasing.

Bobbins and Axle Protectors for Track Days

Frame sliders protect the mid-section of the bike, but a slide on track will also see the wheels and axles scraping across the ground. Bobbins — short cylindrical protectors that fit onto the swingarm spools — and axle protectors that mount directly to the front and rear axle nuts provide essential coverage for these contact points.

On a track day bike, the combination of frame sliders, front axle protectors, and rear bobbins and axle protectors gives you comprehensive ground contact protection for the most common crash scenarios. For the Tuono V4, look for axle protectors with a wide enough diameter to properly deflect load away from the wheel hub and brake disc.

Bobbins also serve a secondary purpose — they provide the mounting points used when the bike is placed on a paddock stand, which is essential equipment for track days and workshop maintenance.

Exhaust Upgrades: What to Look For

The Tuono V4 factory exhaust is a competent unit but represents a significant weight and performance compromise — engineered to pass emissions and noise regulations across multiple markets. Aftermarket exhaust systems for the Tuono V4 typically deliver weight savings of several kilograms, improved power delivery (particularly in the mid-range), and a dramatically improved exhaust note that does justice to the V4 engine's character.

For most road riders, a slip-on muffler replacement is the sweet spot — meaningful weight and sound improvement with a straightforward installation and no fuelling remapping required. Titanium slip-ons offer the best weight savings; carbon-bodied options are slightly heavier but excellent in terms of heat resistance and aesthetics.

Full system exhausts replace both the headers and the muffler, delivering greater power gains and maximum weight reduction. However, full systems typically require an ECU remap to deliver the full benefit and may require additional noise reduction for road use. They are best suited to track-focused builds.

When evaluating an exhaust system for your Tuono V4, look for: TIG-welded construction with quality bracketry; heat shields on any section near your leg or bodywork; correct dB killer provisions for track use; and clear compatibility information for your specific year and variant.

Seat Covers: Grip for the Supernaked Riding Position

The Tuono V4's aggressive, forward-biased riding position places real demands on lower-body grip. With your weight shifted forward and your legs actively bracing against hard acceleration and braking, a slippery seat cover quickly becomes a frustration — and at the limit, a genuine handling issue as you shift body weight to manage the chassis.
