Aprilia RSV4, Tuono, and Shiver Exhaust Upgrades: Italian Performance Guide
Aprilia is one of the most race-pedigreed motorcycle manufacturers in the world, with more World Superbike and MotoGP titles than almost any other manufacturer. Their street bikes — the RSV4, Tuono V4, and Shiver — share that race DNA and are popular with riders who demand performance alongside Italian style.
Exhaust upgrades are one of the most popular modifications on all three models, and the aftermarket support is strong. Here's what to consider.
Aprilia RSV4 Exhaust Upgrades
Why the RSV4 Benefits from an Exhaust Upgrade
The Aprilia RSV4 is already a supremely capable superbike, with around 217 hp in the 2021+ Factory trim. The stock exhaust, however, is heavily silenced to meet EU road regulations and significantly undercuts the sound and power potential of the 65° V4 engine.
An aftermarket exhaust on the RSV4 delivers:
- Dramatic sound improvement — the RSV4's V4 engine has an incredible sound character that the stock exhaust largely suppresses. A quality aftermarket system releases this.
- Weight saving — the stock underseat exhaust system is substantial; aftermarket slip-ons typically save 3–6 kg
- Improved throttle response — reduced backpressure allows the engine to breathe more freely
Exhaust Options for the RSV4
The RSV4 uses an underseat 4-to-1 exhaust configuration with a large silencer under the tail unit. Slip-on replacements for the terminal silencer are the most common upgrade and the easiest to install.
Full exhaust systems are also available for the RSV4 — these provide the maximum performance gain and are popular for track use. Full systems require removal of the catalytic converter (making them not road-legal in most jurisdictions in that configuration) and ideally an ECU remap to fully utilise the improved flow.
For road use, a road-legal slip-on is the sensible choice. Several Italian exhaust manufacturers produce EC-homologated systems for the RSV4 that provide a dramatic sound improvement while remaining road-legal.
Aprilia Tuono V4 Exhaust Upgrades
The Tuono V4 shares its V4 engine architecture with the RSV4, making it one of the most powerful and characterful naked bikes available. The exhaust upgrade considerations are similar to the RSV4:
- The Tuono's naked configuration means the exhaust system is more visible than on the RSV4, making the aesthetic impact of an upgrade more significant
- Road-legal slip-ons are widely available and provide excellent sound improvement
- Full race systems are used extensively in track day configurations
Aprilia Shiver 750 / 900 Exhaust Upgrades
The Shiver 750 and its successor the Shiver 900 use a 90° V-twin engine and occupy a different market position — a sporty middleweight that's more accessible than the RSV4/Tuono but still characterful and capable. The stock exhaust on both models is a twin-exit underseat system.
Dual slip-on systems (replacing both terminal silencers) are popular on the Shiver and produce a distinctive V-twin sound note. Silmotor and Zard both produce dual slip-on options for the Shiver 750, with road-legal configurations available.
Key Buying Considerations for Aprilia Exhausts
- Model year fitment — the RSV4 went through significant revisions in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2021. Exhaust fitment is often specific to these generation breaks, so always verify by year.
- Road-legal certification — EC homologated systems are required for road use in the EU. Non-homologated race systems should be reserved for track use.
- Dual vs. single exit — the Shiver has a dual-exit stock configuration; upgrading to a dual slip-on system maintains the symmetrical look.
- Remap requirement — full exhaust systems on fuel-injected Aprilias (all current models) will run lean without a remap or power commander. Slip-ons alone typically don't require remapping.
