The GRIPONE S4 comes in a plug & play kit that includes all the components needed for installation: control unit, plug & play wiring loom, led alarm (that can be positioned near the dashboard), +/- buttons, bracket for buttons, speed sensors, brackets for speed sensors (not plug and play) , USB cable, USB stick with software (for Windows) and user manual. The GRIPONE S4 encloses 3 control strategies: traction control (with auto-corrector), anti wheelie, launch assistance. (Note: launch assistance is not a rev limiter like other launch controls, our strategy can reduce power when there is sliding or wheelie during the start phase. Other components such as the IMU inertial platform and the DAM datalogger are optional (and can be purchased separately).
GRIPONE S4 is the fifth generation of traction control systems designed and produced by GUBELLINI s.a.s. . Thanks to the propretary technology 3D-INTELLIGENCE and the new SELF CORRECTOR algorith, GRIPONE S4 is even more powerful and easy to be used. 3D-INTELLIGENCE is the innovative calculation system that analyzes the dynamics of bike. Thanks to an inertial platform (IMU), GRIPONE S4 can understand the position of bike in space and instantly calculate the level of "safe sliding" over which the rider can not go. The user sets the desired "average" sensitivity" of traction control, but the system can increase sensitivity (and security) in critical situations or change it to optimize acceleration when conditions allow it. You do not have to accept compromises between safety and performance, with GRIPONE S4 you can get both.
GRIPONE S4 is thought to be used in sport racing, where everything must be optimized to improve safe and performance. For this reason GRIPONE S4 encloses a serial data line that can be connected to DAM datalogger. The datalogger can record all the internal parameters that performe the strategies and you can analyze the data to optimize your traction control system.
The new brackets included into the kit are thought to make the speed sensor installation more easy then before. The brackets are not plug & play but allow the installation on the majority of bikes. By the brackets, the sensors can be placed in front of the brake disk bolts. Every bolts is detected by the sensors that trasmit the signal to the ECU to calculate the speed of both wheels.
The wiring loom included into the kit is completely plug & play. It does not need any kind of modification on the original harness becuase it made with the original connectors. In the most of the applications, the wiring loom is connected to the coils, between the coil and the original connector.
GRIPONE S4 works well even without being connected to the inertial platform IMU. Through the calculation of speeds and derived accelerations, GRIPONE S4 can simulate the wheel load used by the 3D-INTELLIGENCE strategy. However, if you want the complete control and the maximum performance, we recommend you to include the inertial platform in your system. With GRIPONE S4 installation and adjustment of the IMU is simple, thanks to the wizard procedure included with the WINSOFT software.
- 3D-Intelligence. The new control system calculates the ideal sliding level in all condition. Every 0.005 seconds GRIPONE S4 check the data came from the IMU and it updates the sensitivity in real-time.
Traction control. The most important function of GRIPONE S4 is the control of traction. By the speed sensors the system check the sliding of rear tyre and reduce the power when it is too much (or dangerous). It is based on 3D-INTELLIGENCE algorithm. The user can adjust the control strategy in many different way because the system is very flexible. The user can start from a solid base with our base map available online.
Anti wheelie. GRIPONE S4 allows adjustment of the anti wheelie separately from the traction control. This avoid all "phantom" cuts made by the traction control when the bike is wheeling. The "Pulse Wave" wheelie control ensures fast intervention and a gradual rapprochement of the wheel to the asphalt. With GRIPON S4 you will not suffer anymore about the typical "on/off" feeling of other control systems.
- Launch control. Using a sophisticated algorithm, GRIPONE S4 help the launch phase. No button for activation: every time the bike stay stoppedfor more than 5 sec the launch control is automatically activated. During the launch, GRIPONE S4 will keep under control the wheelie and /or the sliding of rear tyre. The strategy will switch off automatically over a certain speed (programmable by software WINSOFT). Note: our launch control is not a rev limiter.
Self correction. GRIPONE S4 comes with a 2° generation of self correction strategy (for the traction control). Even if you do not properly adjust the sensitivity of the traction control, the system will be able to correct it by itself. Relatively in a short time frame (equivalent to a 3-4 laps of circuit, more less 15km) GRIPONE S4 calculates the ideal sensitivity, depending on how the rider is using the bike and optimizes it. every time you stop the bike, the system will take note of the correction and it adjust the parameters that manage the traction control strategy. Without any modification by you, GRIPONE S4 will optimize the setup. After few runs, you can download the map optimized and save it on your PC.
- Maps. With SELF CORRECTION, GRIPONE S4 does not need anymore of specific map for every bike. GRIPONE S4 is delivered already with a solid base map, based only on the engine type: 4 cylinders, 3 cylinders, 2 cylinders and 1 cylinder. After the installation of the ECU, the harness and speed sensors, you have to input the number of bolts detected by the speed sensors. Read the user manual to learn more about the configuration.
- Total customization. With GRIPONE S4 it is possible to adjust many parameters to let him works as you want. Install WINSOFT from the memory stick and access to all the parameters to set your traction control system.
PID controller. GRIPONE S4 is the only "stand alone" traction control system with a real PID controller (Proportional, Integrative, Derivative). The PID controller can make the system extremely fast, yet stable, anticipating the sudden loss of traction and stabilizing the bike in the undulations.
INCLUDED INTO THE GRIPONE S4 KIT
The kit includes everything you need for installation on the bike. You do not have to add more. The inertial platform IMU and the DAM Datalogger are not included in the kit but are available as optional accessories. The GRIPONE S4 control unit also works without the IMU. NOTE: the bracket kit included in GRIPONE S4 is not plug & play. It is universal and needs to be adapted to the various models.
HOW IT WORKS:
The other traction control units are based on the outdated concept of "sensitivity": the user chooses a fixed level of sensitivity that determines the activation of the system and the reduction of power. This approach determines a compromise between the various curves (even when the sensitivity change by the angle of the bike).
GRIPONE S4 proposes a new concept called "target of safe sliding." By the inertial platform (IMU) GRIPONE S4 is able to understand the position of the bike and evaluate its dynamics status. Through the accelerations along the three axes (X, Y and Z) and the speeds of the wheels, the GRIPONE S4 algorithm estimates a "safe target" (ie a maximum slipping beyond which it is necessary to reduce the power). 200 times per second the "safe target" is recalculated and updated. In this way, the sensitivity is continuously varied and optimized allowing greater safety and better performance. GRIPONE S4 introduce the 2° generation of self correction of the traction control. If the user loads a map with a sensitivity not suited to his riding style, the system will be able to correct itself. Relatively in a short time frame (equivalent to a 3-4 laps of circuit, more less 15km) GRIPONE S4 calculates the ideal sensitivity, depending on how the rider is using the bike and optimizes it slowly (step by step). Every time the you switch of the bike, the system will take note of the correction and it replace the old average sensitive with the new one. Without any intervention by you, GRIPONE S4 will optimize the setup. After few runs, you can download the map optimized and save it on your PC.
Do not just change the sensitivity vary with the bending angle! At same angle the bike can accelerate, brake, increase or reduce the inclination angle. Can slide laterally or slip longitudinally.

WHAT I BUY WHEN I BUY GRIPONE S3?
GRIPONE S3 is available in plug & play kit. Every kit includes: one ECU, one wiring loom, +/- remote buttons, one remote led, two speed sensors, one kit of brackets for the speed sensors (the brackets are not plug&play), one USB cable (to program the ECU), one USB memory with the software to manage the maps (XP, VISTA, WIN7, WIN8, WIN10).
HOW GRIPONE S3 WORKS?
GRIPONE S3 detects the speed of both wheels, via the sensors which read the passage of the screws of the brake discs. Using these data of speed (and others) GRIPONE S3 is able to understand if the rear wheel is slipping or if the bike is wheeling. In such a case it reduces the engine power.
HOW GRIPONE S3 IS CONNECTED TO THE BIKE?
GRIPone S3 can be connected up to 4 cylinders (via 4 coils or 4 injectors). The connection varies from bike to bike. GRIPone S3 takes power directly from the coils or from the injectors so it does not need a 12 volt power source.
DOES THE CONNECTION REQUIRE MODIFICATION TO THE BIKE WIRING LOOM?
No. GRIPONE S3 wiring loom is a plug & play loom that can be plugged to the factory loom with the original connectors.
HOW CAN I INSTALL THE SPEED SENSORS?
The speed sensors (2) provided in the kit are to be placed in proximity of the brake disc (front and rear) in such a way as to detect the passage of the screws that secure the brake disc to the wheel rim. With the kit is provided a set of universal brackets that fits generally to a wide range of models. If the brackets are not compatible with the bike, it is up to the customer to adapt them or create new ones.
HOW CAN GRIPONE S3 REDUCE THE POWER OF THE BIKE?
When it should decrease the power, GRIPONE S3 cuts a certain number of firing (or injected if it is connected to the injectors) at a certain frequency. The following scheme to cut firing varies as a function of motorcycle, the number of cylinders and the power reduction percentage to be applied.
HOW CAN I ADJUST GRIPONE S3?
GRIPONE S3 is adjusted by sending a map from the computer to the unit (via USB cable). The plug & play kit comes with GRIPONE WINSOFT software that allows the map management. The map contains many parameters, each of which varies one aspect of the operation of the controller.
HOW DO I GET (OR CREATE) A MAP TO BE SENT TO THE CONTROL UNIT GRIPONE S3?
During the first installation the user can connect to Gripone online database (or direct access to "Memory Stick" included in the kit) to get the "base map." Each motorcycle model has its own base map. The map must be loaded in WINSOFT and sent to the unit via USB. It is recommended to initially use the base map. After a few tests you can change the parameters in the map to adjust the GRIPONE S3 operation according to your needs.
HOW CAN I CHANGE THE MAP BY THE REMOTE BUTTONS ON THE HANDLE BAR?
GRIPONE S3 has two buttons on the handlebars, included in the kit (one green and one red). These buttons are used to vary the sensitivity of the traction control, on 3 levels: MAP TC1, TC2 and TC3. Besides changing the sensitivity of the traction control, the buttons can enable / disable all controls and turn on / off the pit limiter.
WHAT IS 3D-INTELLIGENCE?
3D-INTELLIGENCE is a complex calculation system included within GRIPONE S3 that allows to vary in real time the sensitivity of the control strategies (such as the traction control or the anti wheelie) automatically adapting to the conditions. 3D-INTELLIGENCE receives a continuous flow of data from the speed sensors and from the IMU inertial platform. The data are processed to determine the "dynamic state of motorcycle" (that is, if it is inclined, if it is accelerating or braking, if it is wheeling etc.). 3D-INTELLIGENCE (200 times per second) establish a safe level of wheel spin and optimize the sensitivity accordingly. It is obtained a traction control strategy that automatically adapts to the conditions.
WHAT IS THE INERTIAL PLATFORM IMU?
The inertial platform IMU is a sensor that detects accelerations along the three axes of motion (longitudinal, lateral and vertical). Accelerations provide basic data for the elaboration of 3D-INTELLIGENCE. Through the inertial platform, for example, it is able to establish the wheel loads and the bending angle of the bike.
3D-INTELLIGENCE AND GRIPONE S3 CAN WORK EVEN WITHOUT INERTIAL PLATFORM?
GRIPone S3 can be operated with and without inertial platform. With the inertial platform, 3D-INTELLIGENCE obtained directly an estimate of wheel loads and bending angle. In this case, the system gets the full support from 3D-INTELLIGENCE. Without the inertial platform, 3D-INTELLIGENCE indirectly calculates the wheel loads from the speed signal and does not process the change of sensitivity based on the angle of leaning. In this case, the 3D-INTELLIGENCE calculations are not complete at 100% (but 80%).
IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE IMU INERTIAL PLATFORM TO DO GOOD WITH GRIPONE S3?
Many of our customers use GRIPONE S3 without the inertial platform getting very good results. For an amateur or road use, we recommend not to buy (at least at first) the IMU inertial platform. For "advanced amateurs" and racers we recommend to equip the system with inertial platform IMU immediately.
WHAT IS GRIPONE DAM?
GRIPONE S3 has a serial data line that can be connected to the appropriate data acquisition module DAM GRIPONE. The GRIPONE DAM module connects to the GRIPONE S3 wiring via the connector marked "EX". GRIPONE DAM does not require preliminary adjustments, it is automatically activated each time the bike is over 5 kmh and off when the bike stops. You can download the data to PC via USB cable and analyze them using the supplied software (WinSoft version 2.x.x.x).
HOW CAN I USE GRIPONE DAM?
GRIPONE DAM records the trend of speed (detected by the sensors), acceleration, lean angle, slip of the rear wheel, the level of traction control, anti wheelie and more. GRIPONE DAM allows (through data analysis) to optimize the setting of GRIPONE S3, the setting of the inertial platform and check for any abnormalities. WHICH ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GRIPONE S3 AND GRIPONE CHRONO-TC?
GRIPONE S3 is the leading model of the range GRIPONE. This system is designed to be complete and to ensure the user maximum freedom of adjustment. GRIPONE CHRONO-TC instead, is designed to be more simple in setting and to have a lower initial cost. GRIPONE S3 allows adjustment of all parameters that manage the control strategies (such as traction control and anti wheelie) and IMU inertial platform. GRIPONE CHRONO -TC instead limits the user to a small number of adjustment parameters (just to make it easier to use). GRIPONE S3 can function as traction control, anti wheelie, launch control, pit limiter, electronic gear shifter and it has a serial data line to connect to the data acquisition module DAM GRIPONE. GRIPONE CHRONO-TC can work only as a traction control, anti wheelie and launch control. With the GPS module can also be used as a GPS chronometer. Although both systems can be connected to the inertial platform, GRIPONE S3 allows you to adjust the influence of the inertial platform in the calculation of 3D-INTELLIGENCE. GRIPONE CHRONO-TC instead has a set of pre-assigned parameters that define the operation in the calculation of 3D-INTELLIGENCE.
